Deer Fence Installation in the East Bay
Living in the East Bay hills means enjoying space, views, and wildlife. It also means watching deer eat your garden, strip your fruit trees, and destroy landscaping you spent years establishing.
Deer fencing is a functional, cost-effective way to protect your property without giving up what you love about hill living. At Duce Construction, we’ve been helping East Bay homeowners keep deer out of their gardens since 1983.
The Deer Problem in East Bay Hill Communities
Deer populations in Orinda, Lafayette, Moraga, Danville, and Alamo have grown significantly. The damage adds up fast:
-
Vegetable gardens stripped overnight
-
Ornamental plantings browsed to the ground
-
Young trees killed by bark stripping
-
Rose bushes eaten to stubs
-
Expensive landscaping destroyed before it establishes
Repellent sprays, motion-activated sprinklers, and other deterrents work temporarily at best. A properly built fence is the only reliable long-term solution.

How Deer Fencing Works
Black-tailed deer (common in East Bay) can jump 8 feet from standing and up to 12 feet with a running approach. Effective deer fencing addresses three challenges:
1. Height – A 6-foot fence works in most East Bay hill settings because slopes, vegetation, and structures block the running approach deer need. Properties with wide-open approach areas may need taller fencing.
2. Ground Security – Fencing secured tight to the ground or slightly buried prevents deer from pushing through at ground level.
3. Material Strength – Deer will lean on, push against, and test fencing. Materials must be rated to withstand pressure from large animals.
Our Deer Fencing Approach
Wire Mesh Fencing
Our deer fencing uses 12 or 14-gauge welded wire in a 2×4 grid pattern, supplied in rolls for continuous coverage without weak points. We offer galvanized or black coated galvanized wire. The black coating reduces reflectivity and makes the wire more transparent against natural backgrounds.
Construction
Wire attaches to one side of the frame only, keeping the build functional and cost-effective. Posts are pressure treated for ground contact durability, with 2×4 redwood rails running along the top and bottom to create a clean, secure frame.
Height
Our standard deer fencing stands approximately 6 feet. For properties with wide-open approach areas, we can build taller. We recommend based on your specific terrain and deer pressure.
Gate Solutions
Every deer fence needs access points. We build deer fence gates that maintain the integrity of your fence line:
-
Drive gates for vehicle access
-
Walk gates for garden and pathway entry
-
Self-closing hardware to prevent gates left open
-
Latch systems that won’t fail
Our in-house welder fabricates custom gate frames for openings that don’t match standard sizes.
Applications
-
Garden Protection
-
Orchard and Vineyard Fencing
-
Landscape Protection
-
Full Property Perimeter
-
Section Fencing (strategic areas)
Integration with Existing Fencing
Deer fencing can integrate with existing wood fences, extend above solid fencing, or tie into walls and structures. We design additions that work with what’s already there.
HOA and Community Considerations
Many East Bay hill communities restrict fence heights to 6 feet maximum, which aligns with our standard deer fencing height. We’ve worked with Blackhawk, Rossmoor, and various golf course communities.
Beyond Deer
Deer fencing often provides bonus protection against coyotes, wild pigs, rabbits and smaller animals.
