Hog Wire Fence Installation in the Bay Area
Hog wire fencing pairs the clean geometry of welded wire panels with the warmth of natural wood framing. The result is a fence that defines your property without blocking views, works with modern and farmhouse aesthetics, and stands up to Bay Area weather for decades.
At Duce Construction, we build hog wire fences with materials you won’t find from other contractors: black coated wire for a modern look and quality redwood framing. The combination creates a fence that looks intentional, not improvised.
What is Hog Wire Fencing?
Hog wire fencing (also called welded wire, box wire, or wood-and-wire fencing) uses rigid metal wire panels set within a wooden frame. Originally developed for livestock, the style has become popular in residential settings for its open, clean appearance.
The wire panels are welded wire mesh, meaning horizontal and vertical wires are joined at each intersection point by electric resistance welding. This creates a rigid panel that maintains its shape without sagging.
Basic Components:
-
Wire panels: Heavy-gauge welded wire in a grid pattern
-
Wood frame: Top rail, bottom rail, and posts
-
Wire trim: Wood strips that secure the wire and create a finished edge

Our Specifications
Black Coated 6-Gauge Wire – Six-gauge wire measures approximately 0.192 inches in diameter, substantially stronger than the 9-gauge (0.148 inches) commonly used in residential applications. The black finish looks more intentional and modern than galvanized silver.
4×4 Square Pattern – The 4-inch square grid is the classic hog wire pattern. Provides 94% visibility compared to solid fencing.
Construction Heart Redwood Frame – We use Construction Heart Redwood for framing, not generic lumber. Frames include redwood top rail, bottom rail, and wire trim covering all wire edges.
Post Options:
-
Douglas Fir pressure-treated posts (standard)
-
Steel post upgrades with 30-year guarantee
Benefits of Hog Wire Fencing
Preserve Your Views – Solid wood or vinyl fencing blocks views entirely. Hog wire defines your boundary while maintaining sight lines.
Complement Multiple Architectural Styles – Works with modern homes, farmhouse/craftsman, and traditional homes.
Fire-Smart Fencing – The open wire design offers advantages in fire-prone areas. Wire mesh is steel (doesn’t ignite) and open design allows embers to pass through rather than accumulating.
Stronger Than Alternatives – Welded wire panels are substantially more rigid than chain link or woven wire.
Low Maintenance – Wire panels need no maintenance. Redwood frame weathers gracefully or can be stained.
Works on Slopes – Panels can be stepped or racked to follow grade changes.
