Wood Fence Installation in the Bay Area

A wood fence built with premium lumber and skilled craftsmanship will protect your property and look better than your neighbors’ fences for decades. At Duce Construction, we control the entire process from lumber selection to final installation, giving you access to quality that other contractors simply can’t offer.

Here’s why that matters: We own our own lumber company.

Our full-time sawyer processes 30 different grades of California redwood. When you work with us, you’re not getting whatever a supplier had in stock that week. You’re getting wood selected specifically for your project.

This is why Bay Area homeowners who care about quality have trusted us with their fences since 1983.

Wood fencing is a vertical board barrier system typically built with 4×4 or 6×6 posts spaced 6-8 feet apart, horizontal rails, and fence boards ranging from 1×4 to 1×8 dimensions. The materials and construction method determine how long the fence lasts and how it looks over decades of Bay Area weather.

The Lumber Mill Advantage

Most fence contractors buy materials from distributors who buy from suppliers who buy from mills. Each step adds cost and removes control over quality.

We cut out the middlemen. Literally.

Wood Species We Work With

Construction Heart Redwood (Our Primary Choice)
Construction Heart Redwood is harvested from the center of old-growth redwood trees. This heartwood contains natural tannins and oils that actively resist rot-causing fungi and wood-boring insects. The warm, reddish-brown color weathers to a distinguished silver-gray or can be maintained with stain. This is what most of our fences are built from, and with 30 grades available, we can match your budget and aesthetic goals.

Brazilian Hardwoods (Premium Option)
For clients who want maximum durability and a distinctive look, we work with Brazilian hardwoods including Ipe and Red Batu. Ipe lumber carries a Janka hardness rating of 3,680 lbf (red oak rates 1,290 lbf for comparison). This density gives Ipe a Class A fire rating and natural resistance to rot that outlasts treated lumber by decades.

Western Red Cedar
Cedar offers natural rot resistance similar to redwood with a different color profile. We use it occasionally when clients prefer the look or when matching existing cedar structures.

Post Materials and Construction

Douglas Fir Pressure-Treated Posts (Standard)

Douglas Fir is harvested in the Pacific Northwest and selected for posts because it grows straight with minimal knots. Our posts undergo pressure treatment that penetrates 2-3 inches into the wood, protecting against rot and termites for 25+ years.

Steel Post Upgrades (30-Year Guarantee)

Our in-house welder fabricates steel posts that will never rot, warp, or fail. We stand behind steel posts with a 30-year guarantee.

Fence Styles

Good Neighbor / Board-on-Board – Boards on alternating sides of rails. Both sides look finished. Our most requested style.

Horizontal Fencing – Modern, architectural look with clean lines. Requires careful attention to framing.

Solid Privacy / Nail-On – Traditional dog-ear or flat-top boards nailed side by side. Most economical full-privacy option.

Lattice Top – Lattice section above solid boards increases height while allowing airflow and light. Diagonal, square, or piano key patterns available.

Gate Construction

Wood-Framed Gates with Arbors – Proper joinery, diagonal bracing. Arbor supports for larger gates.

Steel-Framed Gates – In-house welder builds custom steel frames. Won’t warp, twist, or sag regardless of size. Clad with wood boards to match fence.
