MWF – Galvanized Steel Fencing Installation in the Bay Area

Galvanized steel privacy walls give you a fence you can customize with vertical or horizontal orientation, to (almost) any height with a few different panel configurations. They pass California’s fire certifications, hold up to 130 mph sustained winds, and carry a 30 to 60-year lifespan depending on the coating grade you choose. The steel material comes primed and ready for painting.

Duce Construction installs galvanized steel metal privacy wall systems throughout the East Bay. Our in-house welder handles custom configurations, grade transitions, and gate fabrication beyond what standard kits provide. Since 1983, we’ve built fencing that fits the Bay Area’s conditions, not fencing built to a national catalog spec.

Looking at your fencing options? Galvanized steel and aluminum fencing sit alongside each other on our menu. Both are solid choices. The right material depends on your priorities.

Galvanized Steel Privacy Walls and Fence Systems

Galvanized steel privacy walls are solid-panel fence systems. No pickets. No gaps (unless requested). Full visual privacy from post to post and zone zero compliant.

“Galvanized” describes the hot-dip galvanization process: steel submerged in a bath of molten zinc at approximately 840°F, forming zinc-iron alloy layers that bond directly to the steel surface. This is not a surface coating. The zinc metallurgically fuses to the steel, acting as both a physical barrier against moisture and oxygen and as a sacrificial anode that corrodes preferentially to protect the underlying steel. That is why hot-dip galvanized steel corrodes at roughly 1/30th the rate of bare steel under the same conditions.

Panel heights run 4 ft, 6 ft, 8 ft, and 12 ft, covering front accent walls through full-height privacy and security screens. Style options include horizontal privacy panels, contemporary designs, courtyard walls, glass infill panels, screen panels, and front returns. These systems install without brackets or exposed screws, which we cover in the installation section below.

Compared to aluminum fencing, galvanized steel carries a higher wind load capacity and a different fire certification stack. Aluminum is lighter and comes factory-finished in a fixed color palette. Steel ships primed and paintable in any color. Different buyers, different priorities.

Everything Is Customizable

The fence fits your property. Your property does not get trimmed to fit a standard panel kit.

Heights, widths, panel profiles, and gate configurations are all made to spec for each project. You are not choosing from a fixed-package menu. If your lot has grade changes or non-standard run lengths, the system handles them. If standard panels do not fit a particular section, our in-house welder fabricates what is needed on site.

Style options give you real choices: solid horizontal panels for full privacy, courtyard-style walls for decorative street presence, screen panels with intentional spacing, glass infill for views, and more. Having our own welder and fabricator on staff means we can build what the property actually requires, not just what a supplier ships.

Finish and Color: Primed and Paintable

Every panel ships with a UV-resistant primer coat applied over the galvanized steel. That primer is chemically compatible with any water-based exterior paint, which means your color choice is unlimited.

Aluminum fencing arrives factory powder-coated in a fixed palette. You commit to a color at order time. With galvanized steel, you choose color after installation. If your HOA color standards change in five years, you repaint. No factory re-order, no panel replacement.

Practical applications: matching your home’s exterior trim, coordinating with landscaping colors, meeting an HOA-specified color scheme, or keeping it simple with a neutral earth tone. Duce’s crew can apply the topcoat as part of the installation scope, or you can have it painted independently after we complete the fence.

Wind Ratings and Structural Performance

These panels are tested to 130 mph sustained winds and 190 mph gusts. That is a third-party Dynamic Wind Load test conducted at each height configuration: 6 ft, 8 ft, and 12 ft. Height-specific testing matters because a 12-foot fence catches substantially more wind force than a 6-foot fence, and a single blanket rating would not reflect that difference.

For context: standard cedar privacy fences hold up to around 60 mph sustained, with reinforced installations reaching roughly 80 mph. Recent Bay Area winter storms recorded 81 mph on Mount Diablo, 89 mph at Mines Tower in Alameda County, and gusts above 100 mph in Marin County. The East Bay hills, Diablo wind corridors, and exposed ridge-line properties see conditions that routinely exceed what standard wood fencing can take.

Galvanized steel at 130 mph sustained is not in the same structural category as cedar at 60 mph. This fence stays up in a Bay Area winter storm.

Fire Certifications and Wildfire Compliance

Galvanized steel does not combust. It does not contribute to fuel load. It cannot act as a fire pathway from your fence to your structure.

A 2022 NIST study across 187 experiments found that wood and vinyl fences engulf completely in under 4 minutes of ignition. The U.S. Fire Administration identifies fences as one of the most common ember-ignition pathways for residential structures: a burning fence launches embers directly onto decks, eaves, and vents. Galvanized steel eliminates that pathway entirely.

The certification stack for these panels includes: ASTM E2768 Class A (30-minute extended fire tunnel test, zero flame spread), CAL FIRE, the California Fire Safe Council (CFSC), NFPA, ICC (International Code Council), and the Wildfire Prepared designation. Every one of those certifications reflects a specific test or review process, not a label.

California’s Zone Zero regulation, established under Public Resources Code Section 4291, requires non-combustible materials within five feet of any structure. Properties in wildland-urban interface (WUI) communities and Cal Fire High Fire Hazard Severity Zones face the sharpest compliance pressure. The deadline is approximately end of 2028 for existing homes; new construction faces immediate requirements. Significant portions of Danville, Alamo, Moraga, Orinda, and Lafayette fall within Cal Fire’s designated High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, which means a large share of properties in our service area are directly affected.

Beyond the compliance deadline, insurance carriers in California are already factoring non-combustible fencing into coverage decisions. Replacing a combustible fence now positions you ahead of the compliance timeline and ahead of the coverage conversations.
If you prefer aluminum, our fire-safe aluminum fencing page covers that option in full.

Galvanization Options and Expected Lifespan

The most common objection to galvanized steel is “won’t it rust?” The answer comes down to coating grade and what it actually means.

The G-designation (G-60, G-90, G-115) is an ASTM A653 standard describing zinc coating weight per square foot across both sides of the sheet. More zinc means slower corrosion and longer service life. The zinc corrodes first, sacrificially protecting the underlying steel, including at any scratched or cut edges. The UV-resistant primer topcoat adds a second protection layer above the zinc itself. For East Bay homes near the Bay shoreline or at elevations with persistent fog and marine layer exposure, the 1,300-hour salt spray test rating confirms the coating holds under accelerated corrosion conditions.

For most East Bay residential properties, G-90 is the appropriate specification. For homes near the Bay shoreline or at elevations with persistent fog, G-115 or the 2.0 MIL hot-dipped option is the right call. All galvanized steel is 100% recyclable at end of service life.

Custom Gates and Access Solutions

Standard prefabricated gate kits ship at 42 inches wide by 66 or 72” inches tall, or 48” width matching the panel system. That size fits most residential walk gate openings.CUstomized solutions are also available.

For wider openings, vehicle access gates, or any non-standard configuration, our in-house welder fabricates custom gate frames matched to the panel system. Having a welder on staff means non-standard openings get resolved, not worked around.

Gate options include walk gates, double-swing gates for vehicle access, and automation-ready frames for motorized gate openers.

Our Installation Process

Site Evaluation: We start with an on-site visit to assess your property, understand your goals, and identify any complicating factors: grade changes, existing structures, utility locations, HOA boundaries, or access constraints.

Custom Design: We work through height, panel style, color plan, and gate configuration. For hillside properties with significant grade transitions, we plan the panel runs accordingly before anything gets ordered.

Professional Installation: These panels use a patent-pending bracket-free, slip-together system. Panels seat onto posts and connect to each other without exposed screws or external brackets. No exposed fasteners means no corrosion entry points through the coating at attachment hardware locations. This is a durability benefit, not just an installation convenience. The system also installs faster than bracketed alternatives, which reduces labor time.

Haul-away of your existing fencing is included in our proposals. If you are removing combustible fencing for Zone Zero compliance, we take it with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does galvanized steel fencing rust?

Galvanized steel corrodes at approximately 1/30th the rate of bare steel. The zinc coating corrodes first, sacrificially protecting the underlying steel. Under typical Bay Area conditions, G-90 galvanization provides roughly 30 years before first maintenance is needed. The UV-resistant primer topcoat adds a second protection layer above the zinc. Galvanized steel with the right coating specification behaves nothing like raw steel.

How long does galvanized steel fencing last?

Lifespan depends on the galvanization grade. G-90 (the Bay Area residential standard) lasts approximately 30 years. G-115, specified for coastal and marine layer environments, lasts approximately 48 years. 2.0 MIL hot-dipped galvanized carries an approximately 60-year lifespan. These figures come from American Galvanizers Association standards.

Is galvanized steel fencing more expensive than wood?

Upfront, yes. Wood fencing requires staining or sealing every two to three years and typically needs full replacement at ten to fifteen years. Over a 30-year period, galvanized steel generally costs less when you factor in maintenance and replacement cycles. Wood fencing also does not meet California’s Zone Zero requirements in Cal Fire High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, which is a separate and growing cost consideration for many Bay Area homeowners.

Is galvanized steel fire-resistant?

Yes. Steel is non-combustible. These panels carry ASTM E2768 Class A certification, which means zero flame spread in a 30-minute extended fire test. Additional certifications include CAL FIRE, the California Fire Safe Council (CFSC), NFPA, and ICC. The panels meet California’s Zone Zero requirements for non-combustible materials within five feet of a structure under Public Resources Code Section 4291.

Can I paint galvanized steel fencing any color I want?

Yes. Panels ship with a UV-resistant primer coat already applied. Any water-based exterior paint is compatible with the primer. Color is chosen after installation, not locked in at order time. Aluminum fencing arrives factory powder-coated in a fixed palette with no post-install color changes without recoating.

Do I need a permit to install a galvanized steel privacy fence?

Permit requirements vary by city and fence height. In most Bay Area jurisdictions, fences under six feet do not require a permit. Heights above six feet may require one. We verify local requirements for each project city as part of the estimate process.
